Day 66 - March 7

NEWS FLASH - this is a BIG DEAL!!!

Today Shay has the opportunity to write the message of the day for his teacher Mrs. Olds.  At the beginning of the school year, Shay was a non-printer.  Printing is extremely difficult for Shay as when he concentrates really hard to print a letter, his tone kicks in which knocks him off balance and he hence loses paper to pencil connection.  This cycle is continuous for every letter he writes.  Of course, he perseveres.  So much so, that HE asked his teacher if he could write in a journal on a daily basis so that he could improve his printing.  His drive amazes me.  I have said it before and I will say it again, I so wish that I could be more like Shay.  He is one of the most strong-willed people I have ever had the privilege of knowing.  I can only hope that this spark will always be part of him!

The message of the day came home today so Shay could share his work - it brought tears to my eyes to see how far he has come.  More tears came in realizing how truly blessed we are to have such an incredible teacher working with the boys this year.  Mrs. Olds goes out of her way day in and day out to give the boys a level playing field with accommodations.  She goes to the end of the earth to ensure that Ciaran and Shay are given every opportunity to learn, to fit in, to shine.  Her patience is a virtue - most people wouldn't have it in them to wait out such a lengthy and arduous process.  She takes on every challenge head on - she pushes the boys, she thinks outside the box, and she creatively accommodates so that Ciaran and Shay physical needs are met whilst still participating in every aspect of the classroom curriculum.  How lucky we are to have her and their amazing EA's Mrs. Hornby and Mrs. Barber!!!
